Wayne C. Forth Photo Collection
The following photos of the SS United States are from the Wayne C. Forth photo collection. The photographer is unknown. They show rare pictures of the SS United States in drydock at Newport News (year unknown). William Francis Gibbs with his obsession with design secrecy would certainly not have approved of these photos being released to the public while the ship was in service. During the SS United States' career, the ship's hull contours particularly below the waterline was a closely held secret. Some would argue this was for military purposes as the ship was designed as a troop transport. I would argue much of the secrecy was to prevent competitors from knowing of the design of the SS United States to prevent them from building a faster vessel.
